A warning that the viability of the tanker pollution compensation system is under threat from the Prestige oil spill 13 years ago has been issued by the International Group protection-and-indemnity (P&I) clubs.
The International Group is sounding an alarm over a Spanish Supreme Court ruling that found the London Club liable for $1bn of pollution compensation.
The P&I clubs are warning that if the Supreme Court does not reconsider the ruling, the matter may be taken to Spain’s Constitutional Court and, if necessary, the European Court of Human Rights.
