Spending in the capesize sale-and-purchase (S&P) market hit the highest level in almost two years in January as bulker owners balanced the merits of giving up potential future gains in a bid to raise cash and survive the downturn.

The sharp drop in worldwide commodity demand has hit rates for the largest classes of bulkers, capesizes and panamaxes. But when deciding which type of ship to sell off, owners have to weigh how long they can endure low rates, what freights will be carried in the future and what customers they hope to serve.
