Competition for business between terminals hand­ling increasing South American grain, soya bean, rice and woodchip exports from the east coast and River Plate region has stepped up following the completion of a new facility in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo.

The net result should be cheaper, quicker and more efficient dry bulk exports. The region’s growing trade has been hampered by severe draught restrictions at the principal export terminals, which has traditionally made loading a two-stage and two-terminal operation.
