The El Faro was a 40-year-old ship, sent into the path of a force-four hurricane, that sank with the loss of 33 lives.

She was an elderly vessel, and whereas age does not necessarily mean a ship is unsafe, most would agree that a newer vessel is generally more reliable. The El Faro was in class and certified to trade at sea.
