The number of laid-up boxships increased by a huge 52% from October to November, according to research from analyst Drewry.

It said owners have been taking vessels out of the slowing market and more will be stacked as profits slide.

There are now 238 ships laid up worldwide, with 17 of these of 10,000 teu or more.

The total capacity lying idle is 901,000 teu, the largest monthly figure since early 2010.
