The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) said the unnamed vessel had departed its berth and was heading out to sea when a low-level alarm for the main engine lube-oil drain tank sounded.

The engineer on watch alerted the bridge and the ship’s speed was reduced while he went to investigate.

The tank’s contents gauge indicated that the tank was empty – about 10,000 litres of oil had apparently ‘disappeared’.
