The 4,380-teu Amsterdam Bridge (built 2009) was engulfed by flames on Sunday while carrying a cargo reported to include hazardous chemicals
The fire was said to have been brought under control on Monday morning, although firefighting operations were continuing.
The coast guard received the first SOS call on Sunday afternoon and sent two ships, which took the crew off the vessel.
The fire, said to have originated in a cargo hold, could not be contained and spread to engulf much of the mid-section of the vessel.
