Andros, the northernmost island of the Cyclades group, has a maritime history dating back to around 700BC — but it has had its ups and downs.

Unlike most of the other Cycladic islands, Andros has ample water supply and in the 19th century its mulberry and lemon trees provided exports including silk that was taken first to nearby Syros, and then on to Constantinople, Odessa and Marseilles.
